Train Travel in New Zealand
The Tranz Scenic (website www.tranzscenic.co.nz) rail network connects major destinations in the North and South Islands. In the North Island, Tranz Scenic trains are limited to the daily service connecting Auckland and Wellington, plus an extra train that runs between Wellington and Palmerston North. Rail services in the South Island connect Picton to Christchurch with stops along the east coast and there is a scenic line (the Tranz Alpine) running between Christchurch and Greymouth via Arthur’s Pass.
Many people don’'t consider the train because it runs infrequently and doesn't go to the big tourist destinations like Queenstown or the Bay of Islands, but it is still worth considering for the odd journey, as it is far more comfortable than the bus. The Tranz Alpine service between Christchurch and Greymouth is considered one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys and many people make this journey for the spectacular train trip.
A hostel card gives you discounts on rail travel and there are also several travel passes that cut the cost of travelling by train such as the New Zealand TravelPass.
In addition to trains operated by Tranz Rail, there are some small tourist-oriented rail services, the most useful of which is the Taieri Gorge Railway (website www.taieri.co.nz) that runs from Dunedin to Middlemarch along the spectacular Taieri River Gorge with bus connections to Queenstown.
