Driving in New Caledonia

New Caledonia has a good road network and driving is a good way to get around, although rental cars can be quite expensive.

All the main car rental agencies are based in and around Nouméa including several motorbike and motorscooter rental agencies. Most car rental agencies require drivers to be at least 21 years old and sometimes as old as 25.

The maximum speed limit in New Caledonia is 110 km/h although it is only 50 km/h in towns and cities.

Average driving times from Nouméa are: Tontouta 45 minutes, Poum five hours, Bourail two hours 10 minutes and Hienghène five hours and 10 minutes.
