Driving in Hawaii

Outside of Oahu, driving is the best way to get around. Road conditions are very good and car rental is competively priced. Although more expensive than mainland USA, petrol (gas) is cheap in Hawaii. The only drawback is that many car rental companies don't want to deal with you if you're under 25.

Oahu has the most developed roads and includes several freeways and the busiest traffic in the Pacific. Driving is much more laid-back in the other islands and it is here that most budget travellers get behind the wheel.

Like the rest of the USA, traffic in Hawaii drives on the right. You are permitted to turn right at a red-light after giving way to traffic except when there is a sign saying otherwise. It is compulsory to wear a seat belt when you're in the front seat.
