Location Located at the seedy end of Fort Street, but it's only a short walk to Queen Street and the centre of Auckland.
Security Very good security with a 24-hour reception, key card access and a locker for each bed.
Facilities and Atmosphere This hostel is a former apartment building and accommodation is in self-contained apartments, each with a small lounge area. Although there is a bigger common room on the first floor, the self-contained nature of the place keeps people in their rooms, so it doesnt have much atmosphere.
Reception open 24 hours
Cost Dorm bed $21 ($20 ISIC/Nomads)
Single room $40 ($39 ISIC/Nomads)
Double room $55 ($53 ISIC/Nomads)
Twin room $45 ($43 ISIC/Nomads)
Credit cards MC, Visa

I'm really sorry, but I don't know what sort of backpackers the reviewers with the negative opinions of Fat Camel are - perhaps you should upgrade yourselves to 5 star accommodation as you obviously don't understand what value for $$$ for budget travellers is all about. Unappreciative. This hostel is in the middle of Auckland, has a bar onsite and you have free dinner included in your affordable room rate.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Fat Camel! - the room was clean, the staff were extremely helpful and the central location of the hostel made it easy for me to see everything. Considering the food is included in the room rate - and I look at this as a bonus - it was very yummy and a good size. I recommend Fat Camel to anyone who would like value for money!!

While I was living in NZ I had a job and was living there. Long story short I quit my job and found myself to be a bit on the homeless side. I ended up in Auckland because I was only working an hour out of the city. Long story short, I was booked into another hostel in the city and I found it to be a lil dogdy and I didn't feel like I could trust the place, but I left my stuff and went out to catch some grub. I met a guy who I started talking to and he was checked into the Fat Camel. He recommended it to me so much I went and checked it out and ended up getting my money back from the other hostel and moved into the Camel. I felt so welcome the second I walked in and talked to the extremely friendly staff. I stayed at the F.C for 3 weeks in total. I met heaps of great people there and everyone at night ventured out to different bars and we got pissed. I stayed in the female dorm and I felt so much at home. I totally recommend this place. I stayed there back in Aug/Sept of 2002. At the time they were working to improve the place, I could only imagine how great it is there now. I loved the fact that you needa key to get in the dorm and a key to get in your room. It makes you have a sense of security.

I have read the other reviews, not true. I have just stayed there, they have totally done up all the apartments over the winter extra showers with no anoying butons to keep pushing extra toilets to. I rearly liked the apartment lounge room, if I wanted some peace and solitude. If not I went to the big common room. The free evening meal was hot and of good quality, not much but it was free and I could upgrade it for $3.
Good hostel,

In light of some of the comments made about my hostel, I feel it important to now advise that we have totally refurbished the aparments with new carpets electronic door locks for your extra security. We have also built extra showers and toilets in each apartment so no more crossing your legs. We listen to what our guests have to say as it is important to us. Our free evening meal and the refund of the airport transport ( conditions apply) are all as a result of customer demand.
Cheers.

I have to agree with the last reviewer. This place was rubbish - dirty, smelly, cramped, rude staff. We were supposed to stay three nights but left the next day for Lantana Lodge, which was MILES better

First we were confronted by rude reception staff who really couldn't be bothered to be working or talking to customers, then paid $21 for a bed in a 6 bed mixed dorm. The dorm was only really big enough for 4 beds. One bunk bed was wedged into a corner which meant the ladder was bloked and the only was up and down was to stand on the head or feet of the person underneath . The apartments are far too small for the amount of people in them. One toilet and 4 gas hobs between 20 is not enough. The whole place is dirty. There is no free airport bus anymore. I could here loud music till 2-3am, maybe from the strip clubs next door. The worst hostel i've stayed in in N.Z and Oz in 7 months of travelling.

Liked the free shuttle from the airport ( saved $12 ) right in the city, try the asian food court queen street. Only hostel in Auckland with a female dorm, (friend showed me) cool paint job and extra showers and toilets. Bar and resturant rocked, try bub's stirfry. Only one lift for 6 floors, bit of a wait when busy. cheep internet in the large common room with sky on the big screen. They had a 12foot screen in the bar showing travel videos while we were eating dinner how cool is that.
