Destination Guides > New Zealand > Otago > Dunedin
DunedinWhile Christchurch has a reputation as New Zealand's most English city, Dunedin is known as the country's most Scottish city and is often referred to as Edinburgh of the South. The city was originally a planned settlement for Scottish migrants but didn't really take off until gold was discovered in Central Otago. The gold rush bought wealth to the city, which has remained one of the most important cities in the South Island. Dunedin is now home to Otago University and the large number of students gives the city a vibrant buzz, excellent nightlife and a thriving live music scene. The city has some interesting museums and galleries and some excellent factory tours. You can take a tour of the Cadbury Chocolate Factory, the Speight's Brewery and the Wilson Distillery. These tours are a great alternative to museums and include tasty free samples. Other attractions include architecture from the gold rush period, walking tours and Baldwin Street the steepest street in the world.
