Takaka is the main hub of Golden Bay. It is a small town with strong hippy culture and an alternative vibe, which gives it a lot more character than the average New Zealand town. There are lots of art and craft shops, but not much in the way of attractions. The main reasons travellers come here are to work on farms and to travel north to Farewell Spit.

Takaka is a health nut’s paradise. There are organic shops and fruit and veggie markets everywhere, plus lots of healthy cafés and restaurants. Most places to eat and drink are clustered around Commercial Street.
Unfortunately, eating healthy usually comes with a high price tag. An exception is the Wholemeal Café (60 Commercial Street, Takaka) in the centre of town, where you can get quiches and lasagnes at takeaway prices. For a quick bite, head to Bay Take Away (46A Commercial Street, Takaka) where you can find all the usual snacks and lunch fare, plus some really good cheap fish and chips.
If you don’t want to blow the budget at the organic market in town, there is a FreshChoice supermarket (13 Willow Street, Takaka) near the beginning of Motupipi Street. You will probably need to stock up on cheap supplies here if you are heading out to Abel Tasman or another secluded destination.
Golden Bay Museum and Gallery is housed in Takaka’s former post office. This small museum has displays on local history including a diorama depicting Abel Tasman’s fateful visit to Golden Bay in 1642.
