This historic gold mining town, 20 minutes south of Hokitika on State Highway 6, is where New Zealand’s largest gold nugget was found in 1909. Today it is a sleepy township with little to do, but lots of lovely scenery. There are a few nice historic buildings, and access to the Totara and Mikonui Valleys. There are some nice beaches in this area, as well as a good heritage walk.
InterCity Coachlines (tel (03) 365 1113) stop outside Maneras Store and Naked Bus stops outside the visitor information centre (4 Aylmer Street, Ross).
There is no backpackers’ accommodation in town, but if you have a car the Old Church Backpackers and Pukekura Accommodation are not too far away.
