The Pacific Ocean around the Poor Knights Islands is home to New Zealand’s most diverse range of marine life, which includes a colourful mix of sub-tropical and tropical fish. Common species include rays, Moray eels and Kingfish (some as big as 40kg).
This marine reserve was famously named by Jacques Cousteau as one of the top 10 dive sites in the world, thanks to its rare subtropical fish species, sponge gardens and gorgonian fields, underwater caves and arches, and incredible visibility.
Whangarei and Tutukaka, 30 minutes drive from Whangarei, are the main places to organise trips out to the islands.
