Otorohanga is known as New Zealand’s kiwi capital and some travellers use it as a base for visiting the Waitomo Caves. Otorohanga’s main attraction is the kiwi house and adjoining native bird park, which is a must if you’ve got your heart set on seeing a real live kiwi.

InterCity Coachlines (tel (09) 623 1503) stop on Wahanui Crescent near the visitor information centre. Nakedbus.com goes to destinations throughout the North Island and stops on Maniapoto Street (outside the ANZ bank northbound and outside the library southbound).
Oto’s main attraction is the kiwi house where you have the opportunity to see New Zealand’s national bird along with other native birds and native wildlife including tuataras and wetas.
