Methven & Mount Hutt

Methven is a small town that quietly prepares for the annual onslaught of skiers and snowboarders who come for the snow on Mount Hutt. It has a great range of accommodation, but budget places fill up months in advance for winter. There are not a lot of facilities in town, but there are a couple of good pubs, and during snow season the atmosphere is buzzing day and night. It is surrounded by Canterbury farmland, 92km from Christchurch. In the area there is good salmon fishing, golfing and jet boating in the Rakaia Gorge.

Eating & drinking

Methven is a small town, so there is not much to choose from. There are two supermarkets in the centre of town where you can gather basic cooking supplies. Charming Thai (17 Forest Drive, Methven) has authentic and relatively cheap food. There are two fish and chip shops in town, the Blue Pub (The Square, Methven) has the best. Stop in at Cafe Primo E Secundo (38 McMillan Street, Methven) for a great coffee in an eclectic setting. Uncle Dominic’s Pizza (Forest Drive, Methven) is a local favourite, and they deliver anywhere in town.

Methven is said to be the best hot air ballooning destination in New Zealand, boasting spectacular views of the Southern Alps as you gently float over the Canterbury Plains. Aoraki Balloon Safaris (tel (03) 302 8172 or 0800 CLOUDS) operate balloon rides that cost $295-345.

Bungee jumping

Mt Hutt Bungy (tel (03) 302 9969 or 0800 1 BUNGY) claims to be New Zealand’s highest, but that’s only because it is on top of a mountain. Prices start at $89 for the 43m jump and during winter you can ski or snowboard off a specially designed ramp for a powder touchdown.

Jet boating

Rakaia Gorge Scenic Jet (tel (03) 318 6515) and River Tours (tel (03) 318 6574) operate jet boat trips in the Rakaia Gorge near Methven. Half-hour rides cost around $70.

Mount Hutt has a long ski season, which combined with its close proximity to Christchurch ensures that it is a busy resort, both with skiers and snowboarders.

A one-day lift pass costs $87 or $43 for a pass restricted to beginners lifts.
