Matamata

Matamata is a small town serving the surrounding farming region. There’s not much here to interest most travellers, but many people come here to see the original Hobbiton village set from the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

Coming & going

InterCity Coachlines (tel (09) 623 1503) has direct services to Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga and Nakedbus.com has direct buses from Matamata to Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga and Waitomo.


Buses stop outside the visitor information centre (45 Broadway, Matamata).

Sightseeing, museums & tourist attractions

Hobbiton Movie Set

The Hobbiton village from the Lord of the Rings film trilogy was filmed on farmland near Matamata. After shooting the film the set was returned to its natural state, but the hobbit holes are still there. Rings Scenic Tours operate pricey tours to the set where you can see the hobbit holes and discover trivia about the movie.

Tours depart from The Shire’s Rest (501 Buckland Road, Matamata) and also from the visitor information centre (45 Broadway, Matamata).
