Maui
Maui is the most developed islands after Oahu, although the big island attracts more backpackers. Most of the big resorts are centred around the western part of the island and it isn't difficult to escape the tourists and explore more remote areas.
The island has some excellent beaches as well as other natural areas including the spectacular Haleakala National Park. Maui is also a great spot for whale-watching.
Kahului-Wailuku
The twin cities of Kahului and Wailuku combine to make Maui's major urban centre. Although there isn't really much here to interest the visitor, you'll probably pass through here enroute from the nearby airport. Because it isn't geared toward tourists, it is an affordable place to stock up on supplies while there are a couple of good backpackers hostels in Wailuku.

Haleakala National Park
This national park is centred around the world's largest dormant volcano. Sunsets and sunrises are among the top attractions here although there are also some good day- and overnight-hikes around the crater. A seven-day entrance to the national park costs $5 or $10 for a car. The park entrance fee allows free camping in some of the park's campgrounds.
