Kauai
Kauai
Of the four major islands, Kauai is the least visited, yet has amazing scenery with a spectacular volcano, Mt Waialeale, lush rainforest and the Waimea Canyon. This is a great island to visit if you enjoy hiking. Hiking trails include the Kalalau Trail in the Na Pali Coast as well as treks in the Kokee State Park.
Flights from Honolulu arrive at the airport in Lihue, the island's major city. However Lihue doesn't have any budget accommodation and most backpackers stay in camping grounds or hostels in the state parks or along the north-east coast.
Lihue
Although Lihue is the island's major city boasting an international airport, it is really a small town of around 6000 people with very little to see.
Kapaa
This plantation town north of Lihue on the east coast of Kauai has a beach and a few hostels.
