Tahiti
Tahiti is the largest and most populated island in French Polynesia and the starting point for everyone. International flights land at Faa'a airport in the capital, Papeete.
Tahiti is a figure-eight shaped island with a larger part: Tahiti Nui (which means big) and Tahiti Iti (little). With lush green peaks reaching more than 2200 metres, its scenery is dramatic. Cascading waterfalls and cool pools in the jungle-like interior provide a striking contrast to the black and white sand beaches and turquoise lagoons of the island's perimeter.
The island's attractions include Papeete, the Paul Gauguin Art Museum and the Marae Arahurahu - an ancient Tahitian outdoor temple.
Papeete
Tahiti's capital is the busy centre of French Polynesia and a good place soak up some French culture and enjoy the atmosphere at the bustling waterfront while planning trips out to the other islands. Papeete has some good restaurants, bars and cafés and the infrastructure to get things done. After the waterfront the main attractions include the colourful Marché du Papeete, some interesting churches and a pearl museum. There are great views of Papeete and Tahiti Nui from the belvédère lookout on Mt Marau.
Coming & Going
Faa'a airport handles all domestic and international flights from Tahiti. The airport is served by frequent le truck services into the centre of Papeete. Various ferries and inter-island ships operate from various points along Papeete's harbour. The Ono-Ono and ferries to Moorea leave from the ferry wharf on boulevard Pomare north of quai d'Honneur while many of the slower ferries including ferries to the outer islands depart from the Motu Uta port area.
