Destination Guides > Fiji > Viti Levu
Viti LevuMost visitors to Fiji stay within Viti Levu - the main island and home to 75% of Fiji's population. Because Viti Levu is the main island it has the international airport, the capital and a good choice of budget accommodation. The southern and western coasts are the most densely populated and the most visited. Most visitors to Fiji arrive at Nadi International Airport near Nadi and Lautoka on the west coast of Viti Levu. There are several backpackers hostels and resorts in this region and Nadi is also a departure point for islands in the Mamanuca and Yasawa groups. The southern coast of Viti Levu includes the Coral Coast resorts and Suva, Fiji's bustling captial. LautokaFiji's second largest city is situated about 30km north of Nadi and easily accesible from Nadi International Airport. Lautoka is an important centre for Fiji's sugar cane and timber industries and for travellers, is a jumping off point for the backpacker resorts on islands in the Yasawa group. Because of its non-touristy feel and close proximity to Nadi's Airport, some travellers prefer to stay in Lautoka rather than Nadi. Lautoka's attractions include the Jame Mosque, a Sikh Temple and one of the largest Hari Krishna Temples in the Pacific. You can also take a tour of the South Pacific Distilleries plant which produces gin, rum, vodka and whisky. Nadi, pronounced "nandi", doesn't have a lot of sights apart from the Sri Siva Subrahmaniya Temple and the local beaches aren't even that good. However Nadi has a developed infrastructure and it is easy to find budget accommodation and organise travel to other parts of Fiji. Nadi is also convenient for making trips to islands in the Mamanuca group. Suva's other attractions include colourful markets, the Thurston Botanical Gardens, the fascinating Fiji Museum, the Presidential Palace and Parliament. If you're planning on visiting other islands such as Kadavu, Vanua Levu and Taveuni you'll probably need to come to Suva to make transport connections. Flights to many other islands leave from Nausori Airport near Suva while inter-island boats depart from the bustling harbour.
