RarotongaRarotonga is the major island with an international airport and the majority of hotels and resorts, it is still a laid-back place which feels a world away from busier islands such as Oahu, Hawaii or Tahiti. Despite the laid-back feel to the place, Rarotonga has a pretty good infrastructure with plenty of places to eat and drink, some good value hostels and excellent snorkelling. The best snorkelling is at the south-east of the island between Moana Sands and the Pacific Resort, although there are sometimes a lot of sea cucumbers around here. Apart from snorkelling, Raro offers some excellent hiking trails including the Cross Island Trek which goes via Te Rua Manga (the Needle). Located at the north of Rarotonga, Avarua is the Cook Islands' sleepy capital and a good place to get things done. There is a good range of shops, a cinema and some good bars, restaurants and cafés. Good places for a meal and a drink include Trader Jacks which overlooks Avarua Harbour in the centre of town and Ronnie's further west on the main drag.
