Christchurch

The gateway to the South Island sits at the eastern edge of the Canterbury Plains behind the Banks Peninsula.

Known as “The Garden City”, Christchurch boasts some beautifully sculpted parks and gardens reminiscent of Victorian England. While much of the city has a decidedly British feel, it also houses the country’s largest marae, and you can learn about Māori culture in the museum. The bold new Arts Gallery is a modern architectural masterpiece, and it is juxtaposed with the neo-Gothic colonial remnants of the city centre.

Cathedral Square marks the centre of the city, which is laid out in a grid plan with the Avon River flowing through the middle.

Christchurch has a lively student population as well as some interesting cultural influences which give it a very eclectic and multicultural feel. No place is better to see this melange than Cathedral Square, where you can munch on cheap snack food while watching buskers and walking past colonial-era buildings. It is a very laid-back city, and one which visitors find charming; many have come to stay longer than anticipated.
